Nuclear Operative Apprenticeship Standard - Level 2 (in centre learner)

Course Aim:

This apprenticeship is aimed at those who are wishing to work or gain expereince as a nuclear operative in the Nuclear Industry.

 

Student Pre-Requisites:

A minimum of three GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) including Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject.  Students must also successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing.  

Note: The minimum age is 18 at the start of the programme, to comply with Classified Workers requirements.

 

Course Duration:

This apprenticeship is a 24 month programme.

 

Location and Delivery Model:

Year 1 - This apprenticeships offers two delivery models with apprentices either based with Gen2 for the first 12 months or in workplace from day one and visit a Gen2 training centre in West Cumbria one day per week to complete their off-the-job training.


Year 2 - Apprentices are with their employer and are visited every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress against their Level 2 Diploma.

 

Programme Components:

The programme delivered through Gen2 will consist of:

  • Completion and achievement of a Level 2 Diploma in Radiation Protection
  • Completion of IOSH Working Safely
  • Nuclear Fundamental training
  • Regular performance reviews undertaken by the employer and Gen2
  • Development of a portfolio of evidence including reports, assignments, and evidence of tasks undertaken.
  • Observations by a Gen2 assessor
  • Ongoing professional discussions betweenthe apprentice and the assessor relating to workplace competence and knowledge.
  • Feedback from line manager and peers including 180/360 degree feedback approaches.
  • Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their apprenticeship.

 

The skills taught during this apprenticeship will include:

  • Work safely in a nuclear environment under a Safe System of Work (SSOW) including Risk Assessment
  • Apply and comply with Operating Rules and Instructions and applying correct reporting procedures
  • Carry out Waste management to sort, segregate, transfer & minimise waste arisings
  • Safely operate plant process and systems
  • Apply routine problem solving techniques OR Solve routine decommissioning problems
  • Dismantle contaminated plant, structures and equipment OR
  • The process practices and supporting activities required to safely operate plant and equipment being used to process nuclear material

 

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.
