Machinist (Engineering Technician) Apprenticeship Standard - Level 3 (in centre learner)

Course Aim:

This apprenticeship is perfect for those who are looking to become a qualified machinist.  Machinists in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work. Work will involve machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/ or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multiaxis CNC machine tools centres.  


Student Pre-Requisites:

Pre-requisites would typically be GCSE Grades A-C in maths, English or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude test.

 

Course Duration:

This apprenticeship is a 42 month programme.

 

Location and delivery model:

Training for this apprenticeship will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle and Furness.

First year - Apprentices would typically learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres with one day per week for their Technical Certificate.

Qualifications gained include:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)

 

Second year onwards - Appprentices are placed with the employer and study their Technical Certificate with Gen2 one day per week. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Students will also have completed:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)
  • Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship is awarded on successful completion of the End Point Assessment.

 

Programme Components:

Machinists in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work. Work will involve machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multiaxis CNC machine tools centres.

They will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. When using CNC equipment they will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations they will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.

 

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.

 

Qualification Gained:

On successful completion of this apprenticeship learners will achieve:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)
  • Min Level 2 English and math (if not already held)

On completion of this apprenticeship students will be able to apply for professional registration (EngTech).
