Operations / Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard - Level 5 (out of centre learner)

Course Aim:

The Operations / Departmental Manager apprenticeship is suitable for someone who manages teams or projects and is responsible for achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives as part of their organisations strategy.

Student Pre-Requisites:

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be five GCSEs including English and maths at Grade C or higher (or new grading equivalent). All applicants will be aptitude tested for English and maths Level 1.


Course Duration:

Typically this apprenticeship will take 30 months.



Students are with their employer from day one and will study their taught components at an agreed Gen2 centre one day per month. This training will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle or Furness. The students are visited by a Gen2 assessor in the workplace approximately every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

 Programme Components:

The programme delivered through Gen2 will consist of:

  • Completion and achievement of a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management

  • Registration with a relevant professional body CMI to provide access to management resources, wider networks, and CPD activities

  • Regular performance reviews undertaken by a senior manager

  • Development of a portfolio of evidence including reports, evidence of tasks undertaken, demonstrations, presentations, assignments, emails, observations

  • Undertaking a work based project during the last 6 months of the apprenticeship

  • Feedback from line manager, direct reports, peers and customers/stakeholders through 360 degree feedback (or equivalent mechanism)

  •  Students will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their Apprenticeship.


Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties and will be achieved as follows:

  • Typically 1 to 2 days per unit taught in a Gen2 centre. Usually delivered as 1 day per month over 24 months. In addition students are given a workbook to be completed off the job within the workplace (equivalent of 24 days over 24 months).

  • 12 weekly assessment sessions (half day each) throughout the programme to consolidate training and support portfolio development (up to 20 days). These sessions are pre-arranged at mutual convenience with assessor, employer and student at the employers premises.

  • A work based end project that will be presented to a panel and form part of the end point assessment. The project is based on a work related project during the last 6 months of the programme.

  • Ongoing work towards achieving the required standards of this apprenticeship including mentoring sessions, professional discussions, study time, employer organised training, site visits and maintaining a CPD log.


Qualification Gained:

On successful completion of the Operations / Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship learners will gain:

  • ILM Level 5 Diploma for Leaders and Managers
  • Minimum Level 2 English and maths

On completion, apprentices can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute and those with 3 years’ of management experience can apply for Chartered Manager status through the CMI.
