Technical Support Technician Apprenticeship Standard - Level 3 (out of centre learner)

Course Aim:

This Level 3 apprenticeship standard is aimed at those wishing to become Technical Support Technicians.  Technical Support Technicians work as part of a team to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of the Engineering and Manufacturing function.


Student Pre-Requisites:

Pre-requisites would typically be GCSE Grades 4-9 (or A-C)  including maths, English and a science. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude test.


Course Duration:

This apprenticeship is a 42 month programme.


Location and delivery model:

Training for this apprenticeship will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle and Furness.

Year 1 and 2 - Apprentices are placed with their employer and study their Technical Certificate with Gen2 one day per week. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Year 3 and 4 - The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship is awarded on successful completion of the End Point Assessment.


 Programme Components:

The knowledge elements for this apprenticeship standard will include:

  • understand mathematical techniques, formula and calculations used in a technical support environment
  • understand the methods and techniques used to evaluate technical data and documentation
  • understand how to identify that the data and documentation being used is current and up to date
  • understand the procedure to be used for making changes to issued documentation
  • understand where and how to source other areas of technical expertise/information to help solve technical problems
  • understand the requirements of the customer (internal/external) and support using the appropriate tools, equipment and processes


Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.


Qualification Gained:

On successful completion of this apprenticeship learners will achieve:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Technical Support
  • Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) 

On completion of this apprenticeship students will be able to apply for professional registration (EngTech).
