Gen2 have over 12 years’ experience in the delivery of higher education courses for the engineering sector, both for Nuclear Degrees and Plant Engineering Degrees with the Gen2 Higher Education Department. The Gen2 Degree Apprenticeship (formally the Technical Specialist Trainee Scheme) allows students to combine real, hands-on work experience in paid employment with advanced-level Higher Education theory to give them the best opportunity of moving into a Technical Specialist role in the engineering or nuclear sector either in Cumbria or nationally.
Gen2 offer world-class facilities and state of the art technology to enable students to complete their studies. We work in collaboration with various academic partners to deliver a wide range of higher education programmes including HNC / HNDs and degrees throughout Cumbria in Carlisle, Workington, and Furness.
Courses are built in close collaboration with our academic partner Universities and sponsoring engineering organisations. This means students graduating from Gen2 have the best chance of employment, as the modules being taught are specially built to fill the skills gap that engineering sector businesses have across the UK.
In addition to undergraduates, Gen2 also offer flexible learning schedules for postgraduates looking to top-up their degrees in engineering. This is very useful for postgraduates in employment who wish to further their education and learning, whilst still in full-time employment.

Our Engineering Degrees in Carlisle, Workington and Throughout Cumbria
At Gen2 we have learning centres throughout Cumbria and with all of our programmes being delivered on a flexible part-time day, or block-release basis to suit the needs of your employer, we offer a flexibility that means our learners are able to study and work at the same time.
To make sure that our advanced learning programmes meet the vocational requirements of the wider engineering sector, they are accredited by various professional bodies including the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) and the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE). This means that on completion of your foundation degree you can register as an Engineering Technician (EngTech). On completion of the Honours degree you will have partial progression towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) as defined by the Engineering Council (ECUK).
Degree Apprenticeships for the Nuclear Sector
Our Degree Apprenticeship is a 5 year programme leading to an Honours Degree in Plant Engineering. After an initial four-month bridging course, you will move into full-time employment with your sponsor company, spending one day per week at our Energus centre in West Cumbria. Competition is high for this training and so you will need a minimum of 96 UCAS points in the new points system as of 2017 (equivalent to 240 UCAS points on the old points system) and two A-level or equivalent in STEM subjects. Leading names currently supporting this Gen2 degree include Sellafield Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and Jacobs. This is a funded course; your sponsoring company will not only pay your wage but will pay your training fees as well. You will be employed by your sponsor and will earn a competitive wage.
